GRAVESHAM AND MEDWAY "BARBARIANS"
After a fantastic first season, the Gravesham district rugby team will be resuming play this September. Invitations last season were limited to Gravesham, however this year we would like to increase the level of excitement by extending participation to players from the North West Kent Gravesham and Medway league. All players in years 10 and 11 will have the opportunity to trial for the Gravesham team. To highlight these changes, the team will play this season as “Gravesham and Medway Barbarians” – a team which will ultimately consist of the best players that participate in the NWK Gravesham and Medway league. We hope to further extend this offer to additional year groups if interest prevails.
The concept of “comprehensive school players” competing against successful Grammar schools was of initial concern to players and coaches alike, but following our success last season, both in training and games, it is evident that we are able to rise to further challenges and take on Grammar schools across the Gravesham, Medway and Dartford areas. I am confident that with the playing ability we see within the league, an outstanding and powerful team can be produced.
Upon return to school in September, schools registered to compete in the North West Kent league will begin their campaign. The Gravesham and Medway Barbarians will commence training mid-September and players will be selected from these initial training sessions. Mr Rowlinson (St. John’s), Mr Bright (St. George’s) and Mr Gray (Gravesend Grammar School) will also be scouting at league games, so every game is an important one.
We are very excited for the season ahead, and hope that you are interested in supporting this venture and foresee the benefits for both pupils and schools alike. For further information, please contact Mr A Rowlinson (St. John’s).
